Rhinoplasty (Nasal Surgery)

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed at the Petroff Center. Many people are bothered by the appearance of their nose and seek treatment to correct abnormalities and achieve the aesthetic results they desire. Dr. Petroff is an established expert in rhinoplasty and produces consistently pleasing results for his patients while minimizing complications. He also strives to create natural and proportional results for his rhinoplasty procedures.

Rhinoplasty may be performed for functional rather than cosmetic reasons, or in some cases, performed for both reasons. Combining nose surgery with septoplasty can effectively treat certain breathing problems, such as those caused by a deviated septum.

Under the care of Dr. Petroff, rhinoplasty can transform the appearance of your face while still maintaining the unique character of your face. The procedure can improve your emotional, physical, and overall well-being. Most patients are extremely satisfied with the results of their rhinoplasty procedure performed by Dr. Petroff, who uses the most advanced, structurally sound techniques to achieve stunning results.

Rhinoplasty is an excellent procedure for achieving the following:

  • Balance the size of the nose with the other facial features
  • Modify the width of the nose at the bridge
  • Improve the nasal profile, including removing humps or depressions
  • Contour a nasal tip that is too large, “boxy,” drooping, or upturned
  • Change the angle between the nose and the upper lip
  • Narrow and reshape the nostrils
  • Correct asymmetry or deviation

The best candidates for rhinoplasty:

  • Are at least 15 years old
  • Have finished facial growth
  • Are generally healthy
  • Do not smoke
  • Are seeking rhinoplasty for personal reasons, not pressure from others
  • Have realistic goals for the procedure

Dr. Petroff will determine your candidacy for rhinoplasty after a thorough evaluation of your nasal structure, medical history, and overall health.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

Each procedure is completely customized to help you achieve your specific desired results. You will discuss your wishes with Dr. Petroff prior to rhinoplasty in order to ensure clear communication and complete understanding of surgical goals so that the most accurate personalized results can be achieved.

Rhinoplasty is performed in our state-of-the-art surgery center under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. You will need someone to drive you home after surgery and care for you during the first 24 hours.

Dr. Petroff uses one of two techniques when performing nose surgery. In a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made within the nostrils. In an open rhinoplasty, the incision is made across the columella, the tissue between the nostrils. With both methods, he gently lifts the soft tissues covering the nose. He then sculpts the bone and cartilage to the desired shape. Any additional cartilage needed to support the nose is often taken from the septum or the ear in some revision procedures.

If you have a deviated septum, Dr. Petroff will straighten the septum and the inner structures of your nose to improve breathing. Then the tissues will be redraped and stitched closed. If you desire nostril reshaping, this will be done in the final stage of rhinoplasty.

What is recovery from rhinoplasty like?

Nasal packing is rarely necessary following rhinoplasty. You can expect some bruising, soreness, and swelling for a week or so after your surgery. A splint may be used for a few days to assist your nose in maintaining its new shape. If you experience pain after your nose surgery, we can provide pain medication for you.

Most patients are able to return to school or work 7-10 days following their nose surgery, but it may take months before you see the final result of your rhinoplasty. Strenuous exercise and contact sports should be avoided for up to 6 weeks, and you should not sleep on your side for a week or two.

How long do the effects of rhinoplasty last?

One of the best benefits of nose surgery is that it’s completely permanent. Because it changes the very structure of your nose, you should be able to enjoy the results of your nose surgery for the rest of your life.
