Sclerotherapy
Spider veins are visible red or blue blood vessels that spread like a web across the skin, commonly on the legs and face. They are not usually harmful but they can be painful.
It is not entirely known what causes spider veins, although likely factors are heredity, pregnancy and hormones. Women are more likely than men to develop problems.
The standard treatment for spider veins is sclerotherapy. A special sclerosing solution is injected into the diseased vein, which then collapses and is gradually absorbed by the body. By the end of the treatment program, the veins are less visible on the skin surface. Sclerotherapy usually also relieves symptoms associated with enlarged veins and prevents further complications.
Benefits of Sclerotherapy:
- No downtime-patients can immediately resume work and all normal activities. But the patient is advised to refrain from vigorous activities for the first 24 hours.
- Little if any discomfort.
- A safe, time-proven procedure.
