 Rhinoplasty (Nasal Surgery) Portland

What is the recovery from nose surgery like?

Nasal Surgery PortlandFor a short time after the rhinoplasty procedure, patients may experience puffiness, nose ache or a dull headache, some swelling and bruising, bleeding or stuffiness. You will likely be unable to breathe through your nose for the first 24 hours after surgery.

A soft packing material is usually placed inside the nose to maintain the structure of the nose after surgery, which may be removed within a few days along with any stitches.  Most patients return to work in about a week.  Dr. Petroff will provide specific postoperative instructions to each patient to promote timely, efficient healing.

The results of rhinoplasty become gradually apparent as the days pass after surgery and swelling recedes. Swelling may reappear from time to time in the first year after the procedure. It is typically more noticeable in the morning and fades during the day.

Contact lenses can be worn immediately, but glasses may need to be taped to your forehead or propped on your cheeks for up to three weeks.

Will I like the results of my nose surgery?

The results of the rhinoplasty procedure may take several months to develop as swelling and bruising slowly subside.  Initial results are noticeable, but may appear slightly abnormal due to swelling.  Remaining patient as full results develop will yield the most satisfying outcome for your rhinoplasty procedure.  These results are usually permanent, allowing patients to enjoy an enhanced appearance for many years to come.

Patients with realistic goals for rhinoplasty are generally very happy with the new shape of their nose. The exact results depend on the patient’s nasal bone and cartilage structure, facial shape, skin thickness and age.

Is rhinoplasty considered a safe procedure?

Rhinoplasty is considered safe for most patients with only a minimal risk of complications such as infection, nosebleed, nasal obstruction or reaction to anesthesia.  Some patients may also be unhappy with the aesthetic results of their procedure.  Patients can reduce the risk of side effects and complications by choosing an experienced surgeon, like Dr. Petroff, to perform their procedure.

Does insurance cover rhinoplasty?

Insurance may cover rhinoplasty if it is done for reconstructive or medical reasons, but likely not for cosmetic purposes.  We will discuss insurance coverage for your individual procedure with you prior to the day of surgery.  Patients can choose to file their procedure for insurance in order to receive any potential reimbursement from their individual carrier.

What is revision rhinoplasty?

Revision or secondary rhinoplasty corrects deformities caused by a previous operation on the nose. It is a more difficult procedure to perform than primary rhinoplasty because there is less cartilage to work with and there may be scarring or tissue contracture (tightening). However, skilled facial plastic surgeons can improve both the appearance and the function of the nose.

It is recommended to wait at least a year after the initial procedure before undergoing revision rhinoplasty, as results will continue to appear and swelling may take many months to subside.  Patients can reduce the need for revision rhinoplasty by choosing an experienced surgeon to perform their procedure and clearly communicating their desired results.

Although rhinoplasty and other types of plastic surgery can be a costly endeavor, it is a worthy investment to choose an experienced, certified plastic surgeon to perform your procedure and reduce the risk of undergoing additional procedures, which will only end up doubling the cost.
